One way to settle that dispute would be to inpaint (outpaint?) a background, post it and see who gets more votes.

I agree, I’m not a fan of realism myself. However, I don’t think it’s applicable to this picture. It’s not really a simple background, it’s more like a complete lack of a background, tabula rasa. I like backgrounds similar to these below. Not overly complicated, but great looking and setting the tone of the picture.

Honestly don’t understand ai bros’ obsession with overcomplication and realism. Detail diarrhea =/= good style. Simple background compliments the pics’ “sketchy” minimalistic style very well imo.
Eh, seems pretty lazy. I think it would look much better with wider resolution and some nice background.
It’s off screen, duh (also it’s a joke). And backgrounds are for the weak.
